Without a strong background in beekeeping, McComb used his agricultural science education to take a more scientific approach to the process.
He noted, “While most people’s bees died in the winter, mine were alive.”
After accumulating a surplus of honey, McComb began selling different types of honey at markets. At the Purdue Farmers Market, his booth not only features his honey but also a live bee exhibit.
Laurie Lambert Van Keppel, owner of Off-Center Flower Farm, joined the market after retiring from 33 years as a professional staff member at Purdue in January 2023.
She noted that before starting her whimsical floral arrangement business, “One Woman Show,” she spent a year researching flower farming.
Van Keppel mentioned that while the arrangements are not fixed, “If someone really wants this container but doesn’t like the arrangement, I will make it again,” she smiled.
